Fuel Poverty – Affordable Warmth – Avoidable Winter Deaths
Fuel poverty is when a household spends 10% or more of its income to achieve an adequate standard of warmth in the home. 114,000 households in the East Midlands are fuel poor (English House Condition Survey 2003). There were 2,500 avoidable winter deaths in the East Midlands in 2004-5. Find out why fuel poverty is a problem in rural areas and what effect cold has on the health of older people.

3rd Age Enterprise Awareness In The Rural East Midlands
PRIME, the national organisation supporting 50 plus self employment and enterprise, launched a rural enterprise awareness project in 2004 with support from the East Midlands Development Agency and the Government Office East Midlands.


Experience Works
In January 2005 Boston College was awarded an ESF contract to run the Experience Works project until December 2006, operating at Boston and Sleaford Learning Centres. The aim of the project is to raise the self esteem of mature people aged 45 to 64, by providing pre-employment training..


Nottinghamshire County Council Recognises & Values the Experience of Older People
Nottinghamshire County Council is a Beacon Council for services of older people. We asked the council how their services for older people reflect the needs of older people living in rural areas. This article is their response. It includes links to key policy documents and describes how partnership activity makes a difference.
Newstead Healthy Living Centre “young@heart” Group Scoop Awards
The “young@heart” group, a project set up by Newstead Healthy Living Centre, won an award for the “Best Partnership” as part of Gedling PCT’s Annual Achievement Awards 2005. The group also came out top in the award for overall winner for innovation.
East Lincolnshire Rural Engagement
Brenda Ruysen is Help the Aged’s East Lincolnshire Rural Engagement Officer. Her role involves helping groups of older people to establish a network of older peoples forums in the area. This article includes a downloadable version of Help the Aged’s “Upside Down Pyramid” report.
Ageing In The Countryside
In a presentation to EMRAF, Simon Main, Regional Co-ordinator for Age Concern, set out the challenges and opportunities in dealing with an ageing population in the rural East Midlands. Rural Bassetlaw Befriending

Garden Party

Rural Bassetlaw Befriending is a voluntary organisation managed by the Nottinghamshire Rural Community Council.

Their aim is to promote friendship and health for older members of the rural North Nottinghamshire community, by offering reassurance, encouragement, assistance, companionship and help.

East Midlands Rural Transport Conference


On October 20th, EMRAF held a conference with Nottinghamshire County Council and Nottinghamshire Rural Community Council to celebrate the achievements of Rural Transport Partnerships and to discuss the future for rural and community transport in the light of the emerging developments such as Local Transport Plans and the Government’s Rural Strategy. Rural Business Crime conference


On October 5th, EMRAF held a conference with GOEM to highlight issues of crime against businesses in rural areas. The conference was organised through EMRAFs Community Safety Sub-Group, chaired by Bob Scott of the Leicestershire Constabulary. GOEM have now made £ 6,000 available to EMRAF to kick-start activities to tackle crimes against businesses in rural communities.

Rural Proofing for Health

On November 23rd, EMRAF held a seminar with the Greater Nottinghamshire Partnership to promote the Rural Proofing for Health toolkit, developed by the Institute for Rural Health for Primary Care organisations. The toolkit helps them to ensure their services are accessible to and meet the needs of people living in rural areas.
